In this post, I will present the argument that The Contortionist’s 2010 full-length, Exoplanet, can in fact be interpreted as a progressive metal retelling of the Disney Pixar film WALL•E. Let’s begin!

1. Primal Directive: The story begins on a planet called Earth. A lone Waste Allocated Load Lifter - Earth Class (WALL•E for short) has been tasked with undoing the damage that years of thoughtless consumption and greed has inflicted upon the birthplace of man. However, this solitude is brought to an abrupt end with the arrival of an Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, or EVE. “Scan the surface. Bring up vitals.” EVE is searching for something relentlessly, and grows more frustrated with time. The two robots are at constant conflict with the “Primal directive”, for in the time that mankind left them to proceed with said directives (“You have been defined”), something happened that we did not anticipate - they developed personalities, nay, sentience. “Focus shifted. Save the organism through implied relocation” - EVE inadvertently stumbles upon a plant WALL•E salvaged during his work. “Now we execute standard protocol” - EVE stores the specimen and abruptly enters standby mode, awaiting collection. She has her own primal directive - to enable mankind’s sustainability, “by any means and every technology”.
